According to Nor\u00f0l\u00fdsi\u00f0<\/i><\/span>, catching fulmars is somewhat of a rural activity. To be fair, there are probably few young people in T\u00f3rshavn who regularly go hunting \u2013 the opportunities are probably better in the villages. One consequence may be that young people in T\u00f3rshavn know considerably less about the natural environment than young people in rural communities.<\/p>\n

However, young people in T\u00f3rshavn can also benefit from activities taking place in the villages, and a story published in Nor\u00f0l\u00fdsi\u00f0<\/i><\/span> (13 May 2012) is an excellent example of this.<\/p>\n

In the interview with Nor\u00f0l\u00fdsi\u00f0<\/i><\/span>, two young men from Vi\u00f0arei\u00f0i explain that on this particular day they caught 70 fulmars, 12 of which were to be used for studies at the Teacher Training College. The aim of the study is to investigate what the fulmars eat. This is done by opening their stomachs and examining the contents. At the same time, the students will look for evidence that the fulmars have ingested plastic.<\/p>\n

Plastic litter in the natural environment is a serious problem, and fulmars in particular have been shown to be affected by it. The birds may have stomachs full of plastic, which can leave them in poor condition.<\/p>\n

The fulmars will be examined by student teachers studying biology.<\/p>\n
